5. Safeguarding

We believe that all young people have the right to be safe and enjoy their involvement in hockey.

The Club fully supports and follows the guidance published in England Hockey’s Safeguarding and Protecting Young People Policy and follows the current guidance available via England Hockey's website.

As a club we understand the purpose of the policies relating to the safeguarding and protecting of young people within our club. We understand the legal requirements relating to the codes of conduct and follow the established procedures relating to DBS checks, responding to concerns and taking appropriate actions.

The club has a nominated welfare officer who has undertaken the England Hockey’s Time to Listen course. This provides training in identifying the role’s responsibility, how to create a child centred environment and identify what to do in specific child welfare situations.

Phoenix Reading recognise that all members of the club have a role to play with regards to the safeguarding of junior members. This includes respecting the rights, worth and dignity of all regardless of age, race, religion, gender reassignment, or sexual orientation.

The club has appointed a Child Welfare officer who has undertaken Governing Body and Sport England recognised training in Safeguarding & Protecting Children:

Any suspicion of abuse or neglect should be discussed with the CWO in the first instance; they will then deal with the suspicion in the appropriate manner.

• No information will be given to anyone else, confidentiality is paramount.
• Parents will not be informed if suspicion involves them.
• Suspicions will not be discussed with the child.

Safeguarding training needs analysis
The Club regularly reviews what type of training and certification role holders should have within the club. This needs analysis helps identify knowledge gaps and the club then works with each individual to get the right training and accreditation.
