About the team

Welcome to Phoenix & Ranelagh Junior section!

We have a thriving junior section which caters for ages 5-16, and we welcome new members throughout the season.

Where?

We train on Sunday mornings at University of Reading’s Sports Park, Shinfield Road, Reading, RG6 6AH (If using satnav please use RG6 6UR).

When?

Session 1: 9:00 – 10:30 all age groups up to under 12s

Session 2:10:30 – 12:00 U14s and U16s.

Term dates:

20 September 2020 to 13 December 2020, 3 January to 28 March 2021.

There is no training on 25 October 2020 or 14 February 2021

Matches

As well as training and mini-tournaments, the older age groups play in local leagues with matches also on Sundays throughout the winter. Fixtures will be posted here on our website on a regular basis and you will receive requests for availability via the Pitchero app.

Contact Us

If you are interested in joining please contact Juniors Secretary Lucy Plummer (lucyplummer@hotmail.co.uk). All new starters at the club get their first two weeks free, as a trial period, to ensure they enjoy the sport and want to continue.

Subscriptions

Subs are £90 for the season, with discounts for siblings. In addition, match fees are £4 for all home fixtures for the U14 and U16 age groups for Sunday fixtures. There are no match fees for away games. U8s to U12s pay £4 tournament fees for each Thames Valley Minis tournament.

Juniors aged 13 and over can also take part in senior training and matches if they are ready to do so (the Junior Co-ordinator and head coach will talk to the child and their parents if this is something they are interested in). A match fee of £5 is charged for these senior games and they are played on Saturdays. There is no additional fee to pay if your child wants to attend adult training once they are 13.

Kit & Equipment

For health and safety reasons, all players must have a mouth guard and shin pads. Mouth guards which you mould in hot water can be found in many places such as Sports Direct and Decathlon.

For new starters, don’t worry if you don’t have a stick - we have a variety of sticks that you can borrow to get you started, so don’t worry about coming along fully equipped! We'll make sure they're sanitised before you borrow them and after you've finished with them.

Any comfortable sports clothing can be worn for training and all players should bring a non-fizzy drink.

Gloves (ones that still enable your child to hold a stick)/tracksuit/waterproofs are essential for cold/wet weather. Hockey is after all a winter sport….

Club Kit

We proudly play in bright orange! For matches and tournaments players wear orange shirts and orange socks, both of which can be purchased from the club. You can visit the kit shop part of the website to order via our supplier - SilverFX.

Note: If you want a particular shirt number you may ask for it, but if it is already in use then you will be allocated the next available number. Please make sure you check with SilverFX if your child wants a specific number so they are not disappointed if its already taken.

Wet weather

We generally train whatever the weather, but in the event of icy pitches or snow we may be forced to cancel. We will send out cancellation via Pitchero app and post it on our website.

You and your child's safety and privacy

Safety of young people is paramount and our Club operates in accordance with the latest England Hockey guidelines. We have also updated our privacy notices in line with the latest regulations (known as GDPR). You can see these policies and procedures on the website or you can ask for copies from our Club Secretary. If you have any questions please speak to the Junior Co-ordinator to start with or contact the Club Secretary.

Covid-19

We will need you to sign up on Pitchero and to complete the England Hockey Participation Agreement (EHPA) before your child can train with us. Please visit our Membership and Covid-19 pages for more information.

We look forward to seeing you soon for training.
