Narrow victory keeps oranges in the hunt

P&R Ladies 2's scored a narrow victory and grabbed all 3 points on Saturday against old rivals Wallingford in Trysports Div 2. The win gets them back into mid-table with only 4 games played so far, and going into the half-term break.

The first 10 minutes saw several missed opportunities go begging for the home team as feet rather than sticks made contact with balls in good areas of the pitch. With several new faces in the team, it took a while for the team to get an understanding of how to play together, but Phoebe Gannon got the scoring underway after about 20 minutes. Some scrappy build up play down the right turned into a goalmouth scramble in the opposition D and Gannon was on hand to poke the ball home and settle the jitters.

P&R looked dangerous for the rest of the half but despite having some short corners, just couldn't shift the ball quick enough to get a clear cut shot at the Wallingford goal.

After half time, the P&R chances continued to arrive and with 4 minutes on the clock Fran Flach scored the decisive second goal. Playing inside left she picked the ball up just inside the 23 and drove into the D, keeping calm and secure on the ball through some tackles and coolly slotting the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

Wallingford came back into the game with a couple of short corners but P&R held firm in defence and goalkeeper Jo Coate cleared any danger in her D. More short corners went begging from P&R in the 2nd half but the good news is that the team made lots of chances and had lots of possession in the attacking half!

After 48 mins, Wallingford grabbed a goal back – P&R losing possession in middle of pitch whilst on the attack and couldn't get back in numbers in time to defend the break away. Wallingford stepped up a gear after the goal, and although they pressurised the home team they couldn't get another goal and the game finished 2-1 to the oranges.

Next up is Marlow on 4th November in the late 4.30pm slot away.
