A great result for Ladies 1 in the first round of the EH Championship

Great news on Sunday for our Ladies 1 team, who took on Maidenhead in the first round of the England Hockey Championships. It was a tough game but Phoenix came out on top with a 4-0 win!

The team came out looking for a lead early on and Bex delivered with a goal in the 2nd minute. A scrap at the line saw the ball knocked in and a cheer from the crowd as P&R charged ahead 1-0.
Captain Rooney and Coach Steve focused on ensuring the team kept a level head and played their game. Plenty of opportunities came around from penalty corners and at minute 17 the team made the most of it with a great deflection from Dr.Kate into the top right corner to put P&R 2-0 ahead.

With tiredness setting in the half time whistle was welcomed by the team. With some coaching from Steve (and jelly babies) the ladies were ready to face the final 35 minutes, 2-0 in the lead.

The refocused team started off the second half with a great goal from Lulu, who ran it up the right, whipped past the keeper and straight in the goal at minute 38. The supporters and team showing their elation at the 3-0 lead.

The final stretch saw Phoenix looking to maintain their composure and keep the pressure on the visiting team. Some re-shuffling of the team saw Ashton and Maddie have a go up front, with some great opportunities coming from more penalty corners and great play from the front 5. Minute 59 welcomed another goal with Bex scoring her 2nd of the game, making it 4-0 to the oranges.

A few fast breaks from Maidenhead kept Flying on toes, with some great saves off penalty corners and well played attacks. However, nothing was getting past Flying and a clean sheet was held.

Final whistle was welcomed by supporters and the team. Phoenix and Ranelagh Ladies are through to the 2nd round with a 4-0 win against Maidenhead. The next game is December 10th and our opposition will be decided by the draw soon!

A huge thank you to Steve Hardy, our coach, and all the supporters who helped keep the team going on Sunday! Shout out Jax for organising the pizza for match teas!
